University of British Columbia, Faculty of Education, Vancouver, Canada
Moi University, Borderless Higher Education for Refugees (BHER) Centre, Dadaab, Kenya
The Cultivating Creative Communities project aimed to nurture and maintain global connections between UBC student teachers at the Vancouver campus and their counterparts at UBC Moi in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya through workshops focused on expressive arts and cultural peace heritage. The objective is to enhance the professional development of teachers in the arts and promote the sharing of ideas and knowledge among graduate students. UBC student teachers at the Vancouver campus and UBC Moi student teachers at the Dadaab refugee camp reflected on their experiences in the graduate teaching program by creating photographic self-portraits and six-word memoirs. These works conveyed themes of gender equality, equity, peace, and conflict resolution, with the aim of developing innovative teaching strategies in the arts for the classroom.
